Progress on all fronts is slow this year. Here's a drafty letterpress/woodtype thing which may get finished soon as a silkscreen print. Don't ask me why.

The theme for this week on Illustration Friday, which I've been meaning to join in for, like, eons now, is "sink". Seems appropriate this time of year: I am ready to sink into summer, into the holidays, and slow down. But realistically? Here's the laundry sink, where I will be spending time washing up the school uniforms before putting them away til the start of next term...

I've been printing, trimming and hole-punching my li'l heart out. Now I've got all these little colour chip books all piled up on my desk! I kinda like 'em. And if you do too, there's a few in my Etsy shop. NEW: Just added a complete set of thumbnail images; click on the little squares below to see the full set and a few sample chips.

I don't know if they're zines or comics or what. They've got 64 drawings representing 64 colours, and they're thick as a little brick. I think they're what it might be like if P@nt0n= chips were also funny.

After three days of trimming and binding 'em all, I'm thinking next time will be a straight up A5 saddle-stapled zine!

Sasquatch

This fella looks probably a little too jovial for the bigfoot of my childhood fears...maybe I should add an R Crumb thumbs-up "Keep on Truckin" sign.

Thought my 64 new names for crayons needed some elucidating. So now we have icons, in addition to new names for old colours. Here's a few. I think we will have a zine soon. A 64-page zine. : ) Maybe prints too? T-shirts? Cards? Hmm...

At risk of looking like a one-track blog, I have another! pressed! penny! This one is old though, from the 1939 NY World's Fair. How exciting is that? (No answers necessary, I'm excited enough for all two of you reading this.)

Mon, 19 Sep 2011 18:27:00 -0700 More postal delights http://littleredhen.posterous.com/more-postal-delights http://littleredhen.posterous.com/more-postal-delights

Been doing a bit of ye olde online shopping lately. The mailbox is beginning to bear fruit. Here is a delightful zine called Paper Crush, from PonyBoy Press's Etsy shop, about the charms of postcards. A gorgeous old linen-finish card (!) depicting "Moonlight on the Pennsylvania Turnpike" (!!) is tucked inside.

This particular zine/card combo ticks a fair few of the "little things that make me happy" boxes: mail, paper ephemera, 1930s linen postcards, golden age of autos, Pennsylvania...the only thing missing is the 1939 New York World's Fair (my favourite source of ephemera).

But wait: did you know that a "model of this new form of superhighway was displayed at the General Motors Highways and Horizons Futurama exhibit at the 1939 New York City World's Fair"? Oh yeah! (Interesting history, the PA Turnpike...)

Can the yields o' the letterbox actually get any better?

You know, they don't really teach handwriting skills in schools anymore. Guess it's another casualty of the computer age. But handwriting is more than pretty letters -- it's said to be better for your brain than typing (writes she via her keyboard), and it would undoubtedly be better for your motor skills (both development of and maintenance of them). How many of us have lamented the degeneration of our own handwriting since the advent of the mouse?

Sat, 03 Sep 2011 16:02:00 -0700 Squashed blossoms http://littleredhen.posterous.com/squashed-blossoms http://littleredhen.posterous.com/squashed-blossoms

Some chit-chat on FB led by Ponyboy Press led me to search for more info on elongated coins, aka pressed pennies. I've really overlooked them as cool objects.

09042011467_1

I have a handful around here somewhere, but after a brief search, I only managed to turn up two. One is from the Cadbury factory in Hobart, made for a couple of bucks from an aluminium blank—defacing money is illegal in Australia—and one is made the budget way: by putting it on a train track and letting the train do the work. (This one was done by a tourist steam engine in New Hope, Pennsylvania, quite some time ago.) I know I've got at least one from the Empire State Building, and also a couple from the Santa Barbara Zoo...will keep hunting...

Got any lying around your house? Where from?

A while ago I got out the old box o' 64 Crayolas and made a sampler, which of course brought all kinds of childhood memories flooding back. So I renamed the colours according to whatever they made me think of.

64_new_names_for_crayons

I am pleased to report that the smell of crayons remains the same, but I'm not sure about some of these newfangled purpley/pinky colours. I wonder which colours have come and gone since the 1970s?

(Update 8 Dec 2011: I've developed these swatches into a 64-page illustrated comic/zine, "64 new names for old crayons" available thru my Etsy shop...)

If you'd told me in 1991 that it would take me twenty more years to get around to making zines and playing amplified music with other people in front of actual other people, and that it would be in Australia and there would be ukuleles involved, I'd have probably died on the spot and it never would have happened at all...
